Why Does My Makeup Look Dry? Top Reasons and How to Prevent It
You want to achieve a natural, smooth appearance throughout the day. Just when you think you’ve mastered your makeup, because you looked great when you left the mirror this morning, you realize your full glam is creasing! It’s now mid-afternoon and you’re left wondering, “Why does my makeup look dry?”
The main reason your makeup looks dry is that the underlying skin is dry, and your foundation lacks adequate moisturizer. It can also be caused by skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, or even an allergic reaction to your makeup.
As a professional makeup artist and licensed esthetician, I know the importance of looking your best and my cosmetics make it easy to achieve a flawless, healthy look that highlights your best features.
Let’s explore some of the top reasons your makeup starts flaking later in the day, see which powders and creams work best to prevent your skin from looking dry, and learn some mistakes to avoid so your makeup stays smooth all day.
Why Does My Skin Look Dry with Makeup On?
Knowing your skin type is very important when it comes to choosing your best makeup, especially face makeup. Your esthetician can help you learn your skin type and suggest makeup that best suits your type of skin. Typically, skin types fall under Normal, Dry, Oily, Combination, or Sensitive.

While you’ll want a foundation and a concealer that have moisturizers in them, you’ll want to find products that work best with your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend you use a light spray primer with moisturizer. Always test a new product beforehand, on your hand or area other than your face, and watch for any adverse skin reaction.
All skin types need sunscreen daily, even in winter. UV rays from the sun can cause skin damage year-round and lead to wrinkles and dark spots. (Read 5 main reasons why SPF needs to be part of your daily makeup routine.)
Apply a moisturizer, preferably one with Vitamin C Serum, to your neck and face every day. Also, be sure you’re not causing further damage when you remove your makeup.
Using makeup removal products that strip away the healthy sebum from your skin will worsen the issue. Avoid makeup removers that have formaldehyde, alcohol, and fragrances, and make sure you rinse your skin with water after you’ve used a makeup removal product. If you have oily skin, find a makeup remover that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. If you have dry skin, use a creamy makeup remover.

Consider mixing setting spray into your foundation and into your concealer.
An especially challenging spot to avoid makeup failure is where wrinkles appear or where it’s most difficult for makeup to adhere, such as near lips and eyes.
For lips, I recommend using a gel lip liner to help you avoid feathering. Combine the lip liner with creamy lipstick and coat with a hydrating lip gloss. Moisturizing lip products will help prevent that dry, feathering look around your mouth.
To prevent eye makeup from creasing, use a setting powder or light concealer prior to applying your shadow or liner.

How Can I Keep Makeup From Flaking?
Healthy skin and good makeup choices are the secrets to makeup that never appears flaky and lasts throughout the day.
To achieve healthy skin, I recommend you moisturize daily, use SPF daily, and exfoliate 1-2 times each week (more often if your skin is prone to acne).
Corrective facial treatment may help remediate existing skin conditions that contribute to makeup failure.

When Do Teens Start to Wear Makeup?
The average age when teens start to wear makeup is hard to define because I know they explore makeup before their teen years. So, their use of makeup kind of comes in different stages. From early exploration (“playing” with mom’s makeup supplies) to purchasing their first mascara and using it regularly.
It’s likely ages 12-15 when makeup use becomes a part of a teen’s daily routine.
Teen Makeup Suggestions
The biggest mistake teens do when it comes to makeup is using a heavy hand while applying it. That is, less is more. If you use too much, you’ll end up looking artificial. A natural-looking makeup application enhances your beauty instead of overpowering it. Start with a few items first.
Eyeshadow
Lip gloss
Mascara
Clear eyebrow gel
Correct and Conceal Teen Acne with Makeup
Many teens have no need for concealer. But, if you have freckles, under-eye darkness (this may be genetics or lack of rest) or acne, it’s OK to use them.
Buy Matte Tint SPF 40
Just make sure you’re using the right kind of concealer. Generally, you want to go with a corrector if you are trying to correct lessen under-eye discoloration first, when trying to spot correct for acne you want to go with something your skin color. Choosing too light of a concealer will just emphasize what you are trying to cover.
If you are trying to cover acne, be careful sometimes you will make acne worse by using pore-clogging cosmetics and then not properly cleansing and removing your makeup.
Freckles are cute but they are basically sun damage, protect your skin now so in the future you don’t have to deal with the not-so-cute bigger sunspots that started as a small freckle. Our matte tint SPF is one of the best makeup products for teens with oily skin. While teens don’t often think about SPF as part of their skincare routine, it really is an important part of having great skin (for life!)
Proper cleansing is crucial to correct and help prevent teen acne. The gentle cleanser and silky cream cleanser are two products especially effective for clients under age 18. You should follow up with a hydrating toner, moisturizer, and SPF. (SPF is not needed in the evening) When you start wearing makeup, you will want to do a double cleanse as one cleanse is usually not enough to remove makeup. Try our cleansing balm, it’s a great first cleanse gentle, and great at removing eye and mascara makeup.
You may want to lightly powder the T zone occasionally throughout the day if you have especially oily skin or carry some blotting sheets.

Everyday Natural Teen Beauty Tips
It’s always best to start out “little” and add to the makeup as you get used to applying it. Remember, you don’t want to overdo it and if you are gravitating to make-up because you are trying to cover acne, it's best to start with skincare. A healthy canvas should always be your first step, that way when you do apply makeup it looks natural and you don’t need as much makeup.
Makeup should be fun!
